Her use of 3-D technique is outstanding, resulting in gripping visual images, enhanced by the accompaniment of the original dance scores by John Cage and others. For a novice like me, not overly familiar with Merce's achievements, the movie brings his dance to life and points to how 3-D technology can be used artfully rather than as a gimmick, or its current excuse to permit higher price points for movie admissions to films, both animated and action-oriented, that should play just as well if not better in 2-D on large screens.

Probably the most essential thing to know about this movie is that it was made for television in the first place and later they considered pushing it into the Oscars, for big screens, as they thought it has the potential to win something. It probably has that potential but I don't think that it would be because the movie is that good. maybe for the acting as it was quite strong from the two main protagonists, or for the screenplay. Oh and for the music, that is indeed Oscar-worthy for today's standards. But if for anything other than that. well, then I would smell something fishinness behind that.
So as a TV movie this picture is far better than great. It has a distinctive visual atmosphere with its gray fuminess and late, cold autumny colors, the cinematography is beyond adequate for such TV movie norma, the world the story plays in is really authentic, beholds many details that reflects those old times. The dialouges are clevelry written, they behold the realism but also some theatrical factor for dramatic purposes. The acting is top-notch from the main protagonists, they bring well detailed characteristics into their relationship by which we really hold their connection close to our hearts, but overall all the cast did a good job. The soundtrack has probably the most appeal for an award as it has that really almost-but-not-yet cheesiness that can easily win your ears over, but overall a very pleasant music to listen to, reminded me of Clint Mansell's previous works.
What the whole movie might fall short on is the world building that plays in the post-war dictaturic times. There are some snipets about the oppression they maintained on all these people lived in the post-war city, however, other than having some tricky questions from the "comrades" it never went further than that, it didn't fully bring the overall alienating effect it should have for the story/narrative. It was kinda like only a world building element in order to remind the auidence what times this plays in, never fully did anything more than that. And probably, the ending, which refers onto this dictature didn't feel that cathartic, because of that "only-world-building-element" reason.
Talking with others on premiere some people found the whole fast paced evolution of the protagoninst's relationship unconvincing and out of place, that it needed much deeper, elaborative, slower tendencies to go through. Personaly I had no issue with it at all. I found the relationship really natural and organic in its own way, it was indeed a connection that is not that easily achievable by anyone, but these two somehow had the luck to have a mostly healthy relationship that helped both of them in some ways to heal all the scars the war times brought onto them.
So. basicly, that's all I got to say about this movie. From TV movie standpoints I found it really solidly done, a nicely put together motion picture that is pleasant to watch. For Oscar worthy theatrical experience it might fall behind a bit as it has some lack of details and elaboratness, so - even though I have no respect for Oscars nowadays - I kinda feel this movie has only oscar-worthiness on a few, specific fields and even there there is always much bigger fishes to fight against on awards like this. Again, if it wins any award other than the music, acting, or (maybe) for screenplay then there is something fishy back there in Hollywood (but it's Hollywood, the Oscars, so there is more dirty business than anything else today.

Have you realised Gershwin died the same age as Mozart. Finally got a DVD copy so I could see the whole thing. Strange that "Singing in the Rain" wasn't even nominated for Best Picture the following year, yet has since far overtaken this musical in popularity. Maybe, they just didn't want a Kelly-starring musical to win twice in a row? I too rate "Singing. somewhat higher than this film, but I still am not shocked that it won Best Picture. Many people seem to see this film as a stepping stone toward "Singing. br> Gene Kelly, of course, was the male lead, playing Jerry: a struggling 'young' American artist in Paris, having stayed in Paris after discharged from the army after the war was finished. He had 2 supporting actors:
Oscar Levant played a 45y.o. 'young' struggling concert pianist, and friend of Jerry. One reason he was included was that he had been a friend of the deceased George Gershwin, whose music was being featured. He usually supplied a bit of light comedy, as well.
Singer and actor Georges Guetary as Henri, was Kelly's rival for the romantic attention of the female lead: young Leslie Caron. She was 19 or 20 vs. the 38 or 36 of her 2 suitors, not an unusual age spread in Hollywood films. The following year, Debbie Reynolds, the same age, took her place in "Singing in the Rain. Leslie seemed like an ingénue pixie, who happened to be a very talented ballerina and all around dancer of the type Kelly was looking for. Apparently, Leslie did not yet know much English, which was one reason she didn't talk that much. However, her speech was clear.
Leslie(as Lise) had somewhat of a romantic rival in Nina Foch(as Milo) who is characterized as a striking looking blond, a charming, rich, sophisticated American divorcée, a mere 10 years Kelly's junior. Clearly she was more attracted to Kelly than he was to her. She picked up struggling young artists and musicians as 'boy toys' in return, giving them financial or other assistance. Clearly, the typical Hollywood formula was for Kelly's character to prefer the apparently naïve teenager over her shopworn older rival. The screenplay doesn't disappoint in this regard.
Oscar has a curious segment by himself in which he clearly demonstrates his phenomenal piano playing in front of an orchestra, which seems to be made up of copies of himself, rather like the many images of Fred Astaire dancing, in one of his films.(I wonder what Oscar had been smoking. br> Several times Kelly cavorts with some street kids, most notably when he sings and dances to "I Got Rhythm. We might wonder why Jerry can't make a living as a dancer, instead of struggling as a painter.
Part of the comedy is that Jerry and Henri don't know they are dating the same girl. But Oscar, who knows them both well, does know this, and is sitting with them in a café, where each describes his girl.
Kelly and Leslie don't do a show-type dance until well into the film, when they are romancing by the Seine, late in the evening. They sing and dance to "Our Love is Here to Stay.
Henri's biggest stage moment comes when he sings "A Stairway to Paradise" while going up and down a stairway, on which a bevy of showgirls are descending, like goddesses from heaven.
Leslie finally tells Jerry that she's going to marry Henri, although she loves him too. Jerry is very disappointed, and immediately arranged a date with Nina for a New Year's party.(Didn't look like winter to me! Leslie and Henri also are at this party. Later, they drive off to get married, as Jerry waves a sad goodbye. But, a little while later, their car returns, while Kelly is still outside. Leslie pops out of the car, and guess what happens? Yes, pretty contrived.
Before the New Year's party, Jerry had a very elaborate daydream: the 17 min. ballet. Unlike some reviewers, I enjoyed this. He dreams he is searching for Leslie, and finally finds her when she is dancing. Kelly had a solo ballet number in most of his later films. In some, such as this one and in "On the Town" he is lamenting his apparent loss of his new found love. In his subsequent films "Singing in the Rain. Brigadoon" and "Always Fair Weather" his solo ballet serves to express his happiness in fining a new love, rather than his fear of losing such.
Cyd Charisse was originally slated to take the role filled by Leslie, but a pregnancy nixed that plan. For her replacement, Kelly wanted a French girl who could do her style of dancing, and discovered Leslie.
Director Vincent Minelli had or would later work with Kelly in the musicals "The Pirate" and "Brigadoon. Both these films had disappointing Box Office reception, but I enjoyed them.

My 14-year-old self loooooved musicals. Like, sing-into-my-hairbrush, audition-for-everything loved. RENT? I saw it live. I had big ol’ roles in my high school’s productions of The Wizard of Oz and The Secret Garden and recreated that fork-as-a-comb scene from The Little Mermaid, oh, always. But as I got older – and a bit more cynical – all that singing and dancing lost a tiny bit of its luster. I was annoyed by songs that didn’t seem to fit into the plot and I was fairly sure gang turf wars weren’t solved by dance offs. I still loved Pitch Perfect and Empire … but not quite as much as I would have circa 1997. So I wasn’t sure what to expect when I checked   out An American In Paris from my library. Would I be able to suspend my So Adult disbelief and eye rolls and just enjoy the costumes and dancing and fluttering eyelashes? Yes. (mostly. ) An American In Paris  centers on Jerry Mulligan, an ex-GI who has stayed in Paris post-war to paint. He and his French friend Henri inadvertently fall for the same perfume store clerk, a shockingly young woman name Lise. Add to this a rich, ‘older woman’ who wants to ‘sponsor’ Jerry’s work and hijinks, obviously, ensue. Some commentary, in bullet point form: * Gene Kelly dances with such joy I’m convinced he’d be tappity tapping around flower markets with little French children even if he weren’t a famous movie star. It was all I could do not to google ‘adult tap classes’ ten minutes into watching this. * Gene Kelly was only 5’7″! His ‘older woman sponsor’ was played by Nina Foch – who was 5’9″ … daring casting for the day, no? * Women of the 1950s: HOW U GET UR WAIST SO SMALL? Really and truly, how did you do that? I mean, it’s unlikely that I’d actually do whatever you did because I like my comfy, stretchy yoga pants, but I’m just saying: I’m impressed. * Let’s take a moment to roll our eyes and make gagging noises that the age difference between the male characters and the female character they’re both pursuing is 19 years. Gross, guys. * The tiny houses we currently love don’t have a thing on Jerry’s studio apartment. Note to self: sleep on a cot that’s on pulleys. * Henri is supposedly an ‘aging cabaret singer’ but the actor was actually three years younger than Gene Kelly. Enter: distinguished graying at the temples. How do I know all this? Because my friends and I googled it between brie and nut pate. Apparently I can’t completely lose myself in musicals anymore. Lise feels a sense of duty to Henri, to whom she feels indebted for keeping her safe during World War II. She and Jerry proclaim their love for each other. Feeling slighted, Jerry invites Milo to the art students' masked ball and kisses her. At the raucous party, with everyone in black-and-white costumes, they meet Henri and Lise, and Jerry finally tells Milo about his feelings for Lise. Henri overhears Jerry and Lise saying goodbye to each other, and realizes the truth. As Henri and Lise drive away, Jerry daydreams about being with Lise all over Paris to the tune of the George Gershwin composition An American in Paris. While we say goodbye to another year, the race for the Oscars is going full throttle as the following week starts to reveal the industry's real ideas about the best films of 2019. Let's take a good look at the important dates at the calendar coming up: Friday, January 3 – American Society of Cinematographers Nominations Sunday, January 5 – Golden Globes Monday, January 6 – WGA (Writers Guild) Nominations Tuesday, January 7 – BAFTA Nominations Also on Tuesday, January 7 – DGA (Directors Guild) Nominations Another thing on Tuesday, January 7 – PGA (Producers Guild) Nominations Oh, I almost forgot, ALSO on Tuesday, January 7 - The Oscar nomination voting closes Now, some context for the non-awards nerds. When we want to see ahead of time which films are the favourites in the awards race, we tend to look at the precedents of the powerful trifecta of members of the Academy that is made up of the PGA (producers), the DGA (directors), and the WGA (writers), as well as the SAGs, because some of its actor members are part of the largest branch of voters. If a film has the support of all or most of these guilds ( and the support of all five boroughs), a Best Picture nomination is guaranteed. Also, we have to pay attention to what the British members of the Academy have to say with the BAFTA nominations, which always bring forward some clear views on what's getting in. And finally, the Golden Globes. Sure, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a joke made up of dozens of foreign journalists that vote according to which famous people they can get to show up to their parties, but there is still some influence in this ceremony. If you or your movie can win at the Golden Globes, you have a shot at the best kind of publicity in these times: a memorable (and viral) speech. Let's take a look at a good example from a couple of months ago. When we were discussing the previous Best Actress race, it was a one-on-one race between the unrecognized Wife herself, Glenn Close, and the breakout popstar-turned-actress, Lady Gaga. While Close beat Gaga for the Drama Actress award during the Globes, the Comedy Actress award went to the underdog favourite Olivia Colman, who didn't have time to campaign because she was busy filming The Crown. Her speech was the only big campaign moment in an awards season that otherwise was dominated by the other two, but it was memorable enough to keep her in the race. And when she won, it wasn't a total shock. Also, let's not forget that last year, the Globes sadly also predicted the two unlikely big winners of the Oscars, Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody (barf). But enough about the Ricky Gervais show. Let's see how the contenders are doing. -1917: Sam Mendes' WW1 one-take action drama has just started its limited release, and while the early numbers are promising before its wide release on January 10, the important thing is that people are aware of this movie as an impressive technical contender. It doesn't matter that it didn't gather SAG nominations, because both the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes showered the movie with nods, and people are very aware of Mendes' directing, Roger Deakins' complicated cinematography, and Thomas Newman's emotional score. If we add up this awareness with the technical nods that it will bag (let's be honest, we already know that this movie will win both Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, because it's loud), we have a Best Picture nomination coming right up. -A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: While the chances for almost anything else have faded away for Marielle Heller's take on the power of Mr. Rogers, it looks like this movie could finally end Tom Hanks' curse that has affected him after Cast Away. He has secured nods for the Critics Choice, the Golden Globes and the SAGs, so everything looks like he is set in stone for an Oscar nod after almost two decades. But the past has taught us that anything could happen that derails his shot. -Bombshell: The critics are mixed on this movie, and the box office has been a little bit disappointing, but the Fox News expose by Jay Roach still has one ace up its sleeve, and it's that its a performance movie. Both the Golden Globes and the SAGs rewarded Charlize Theron's turn as Megyn Kelly and Margot Robbie's composite victim of sexual harassment, with the second of those two awardfests also nominating Nicole Kidman's portrayal of Gretchen Carlson, as well as the whole ensemble cast. While it's hard to see the movie being a financial hit (it's hard to make back a 32 million dollar budget with a movie that republicans won't see because it criticizes their news source, while democrats won't see it because it's better to see the End of Days than a movie with Megyn Kelly as the hero), multiple Oscar nominations (Theron, Robbie, the make-up) are guaranteed. And who knows, because in the next few days Charlize could even steal Renee Zellweger's thunder. -Cats: Oh, poor Cats. It has become the punchline of the Internet, it's gonna lose at the very least 71 million dollars, and it even lost its best shot at an Oscar. While the unfinished, unpatched VFX of Tom Hooper's unforgettable take on Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical somehow got shortlisted for the Oscars (YOU COULD SEE JUDI DENCH'S FREAKING WEDDING RING, AND THEY STILL PUT IT BEFORE AD ASTRA, WTF), a different fate happened to "Beautiful Ghosts", ALW and Taylor Swift's original song written almost exclusively for awards. It's very likely that this movie doesn't get nominated at all, to which I say that we drown our sorrows with a glass of MIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLKKKKKKK. -Dark Waters: What happens when a muted, dark movie by Todd Haynes crashes at the last minute in a rushed award season after skipping every single festival? A failed wide expansion at the box office and zero award precedents. Better luck next time, Mark Ruffalo. -Dolemite Is My Name: Eddie Murphy still holds on to the Best Actor race, and he still has a shot, as you could check with his nominations for both the Critics Choice and the Golden Globes. While he didn't get to the SAGs, he still got a great campaigning spot when he showed up to host the Christmas episode of Saturday Night Live, which, if you haven't seen it, also was the best SNL episode in years. Even if he doesn't get nominated for an Oscar, you can be sure that he will win an Emmy next year, because he was so unbelievably funny again. -Ford v Ferrari: James Mangold's ultimate dad movie is making a place for itself in the awards season because of two factors. One is obviously the technical side, which comes in handy into the narrative of the throwback to the adult dramas about manly men who beat the odds and built a future. On the other hand, Christian Bale has been surprisingly planting a flag all over the Best Actor precursors, showing up in both the Golden Globes and the SAGs. People like to nominate Bale when he shifts from chubby to skinny, it's a fact. Let's see if this leads him and the movie towards Oscar night. -Harriet: Cynthia Erivo has been hitting every necessary step, with nominations for Best Actress in the Critics Choice, the Golden Globes and the SAGs. But her status could be in danger, because of another black actress on the rise (yes, I know, it's fucked up that we already know that two black actresses won't get in the same category). Even then, if she doesn't get Best Actress, she still has a shot for Best Original Song, because "Stand Up", the track that she co-wrote for the Kasi Lemmons biopic, has been shortlisted for that category. -Honey Boy: The Shia LaBeouf comeback has to keep building itself, because this movie has been ignored by the big awards, and also the audience. Kudos to Alma Har'el for calling out the industry's bullshit towards female-directed movies during award season, though. -Hustlers: Speaking of, Lorene Scafaria's stripper caper hasn't been recognized so far outside of Jennifer Lopez's supporting performance, which by this point is guaranteed to get nominated for an Oscar. At least this movie has the luxury of a long life thanks to its big box office success and the rewards of time. -Jojo Rabbit: While Taika Waititi's WW2 dramedy didn't make a big splash with critics or audiences, the industry has been kind to Jojo, with Best Picture nominations in the Critics Choice and the Golden Globes, as well as a Best Ensemble nod at the SAGs (which is their equivalent to BP). Another funny thing that happened with the SAG nominations is that Scarlett Johansson got an unexpected second nomination thanks to her supporting turn in this movie, which could also repeat itself during the Oscars. If we add up Adapted Screenplay, Johansson's possible second nod, and the below-the-line nods, we have a recipe for a Best Picture nomination. All thanks to a movie that's both edgy enough to get noticed, and safe enough to court old Academy members and apolitical people. -Joker: Todd Phillips' take on the Clown Prince of Crime is still making waves, courting Best Picture nods in the Critics Choice and the Golden Globes. Of course, Joaquin Phoenix is a lock in every Best Actor category of every award show, so now we have to wait and see if his winning streak with the industry starts to grow, because the critics had another man in mind during their awards. -Judy: We've been talking about it for months, she has been nominated for every single Best Actress prize in the horizon, and next Sunday we see if the sweep begins for Renee Zellweger. But there's also a chance that the overlong frontrunner effect takes over, and people start looking for other performances. "Yes, Renee is Judy, we know, but have you seen how Charlize becomes Megyn? " seems to be the talk of the town during the last few weeks, and it doesn't help that the critics pointed towards other contender. The "person becomes another person" can be a double-edged sword. -Just Mercy: Just when we thought that this movie was out, Jamie Foxx surprises with a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the SAGs. Now it's a good time to mention the category and how, while Brad Pitt, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Tom Hanks seem like locks, the fifth spot is an unsolved mystery. Foxx is the only shot left for Dustin Cretton's legal drama based on real events, and he's still campaigning to get in that hole. -Knives Out: It must feel good to be Rian Johnson this week. On one hand, the Star Wars sequel that backtracked and criticized most of the movie that you made is disappointing in both reviews and box office. On the other hand, your critically acclaimed original whodunnit just crossed 200 million dollars worldwide. And while Benoit Blanc keeps making bank, the movie has also been getting love from the Golden Globes, which gave it nods for Best Musical or Comedy, as well as nods for Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas. Rian Johnson's chances for a Best Original Screenplay nomination are growing, and the WGA coupled with a possible PGA nomination could even lead to a Best Picture spot at the Oscars. -Little Women: Boy, did this movie’s trajectory prove that nothing’s guaranteed in the race. Both the Globes and the SAGs ignored Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of the classic novel that most people misquote thanks to Moe, and there’s been some controversy that both helps and hinders the writer/director. First, people rallied around Gerwig after being snubbed everywhere outside of the Critics Choice, with the Golden Globes being rightfully questioned because of its gender bias against female-directed stories. But then, some other people questioned why, in a year with great films by Mati Diop, Lulu Wang, Celine Sciamma, Lorene Scafaria, Jennifer Kent and more, all the support went to the white NY director. While Gerwig’s stock will drop if she keeps making movies starring white people (yeah, I know, that debate is for another time), she can rest behind the support of the audiences, which flocked during Christmas for a 29 million dollar opening weekend. If the movie has legs, it could have a chance for certain categories, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score for Alexandre Desplat. Other nods (like Best Actress for Saoirse Ronan, Best Supporting Actress for Florence Pugh, and Best Picture) are up in the air. -Marriage Story: Moving to the other half of Film Twitter’s favorite couple, Noah Baumbach’s divorce dramedy went through all the highs and lows of being in the spotlight after being nominated for every top award and releasing on Netflix. After all the initial praise and chatter, something happened: the backlash. Faster than you could make a meme about Adam Driver punching a wall, it began. Suddenly, from one day to the other, you had Joe Schmoe commenting on a tweet of a clip of the argument scene, saying that he “could have done better acting than that unrealistic scene”, or Barry Shitpeas complaining about how the kid was annoying. We have to consider the fact that the Netflix release is a brand new world for Oscar contenders (Roma didn’t suffer this, I think, because most people saw that it was a Mexican period drama in black and white and just said “pass”), as we saw a few weeks before with The Irishman. Still, Adam Driver, ScarJo and Laura Dern are locks, as well as Noah’s original screenplay. But the “Is that it? ” factor could prove fatal in the next weeks. -Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: It’s kinda bittersweet to think that Quentin Tarantino’s closest shot to the Oscar is really moving forward because it appeals to the old “power of da moviesh” crowd. Anyways, next week we’ll see how the industry starts to reward the love letter to the ‘60s in Tinsel Town, because the coast is clear for the movie to win Best Musical/Comedy at the Golden Globes, and Leo must be already rehearsing his Best Actor speech. The SAGs also showered Leo, Brad and the ensemble with nods, so that could be a decisive step going forward if people haven’t forgotten about the July release. -Pain and Glory: While everybody talks about Adam Driver vs. Joaquin Phoenix, Antonio Banderas has been carefully building support for his masterful turn in Pedro Almodóvar’s self-reflective drama. Antonio won Best Actor with both the New York and Los Angeles critics (by the way, the only two cities with critics organizations that really have influence, because this year every freakin’ town in America now had a critics group trying to get attention with their announcements), and also bagged nods for the Critics Choice and the Golden Globes for Drama. While Banderas is in a quiet third place in the Best Actor race and the film is guaranteed to get into the Best International Film categories, it remains to be seen if Pedro’s original screenplay gets nommed. We can’t look forward to the WGAs to clear this up, because this film is excluded from being nominated due to the fact that Almodóvar is also not a member (other films excluded include Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Farewell). -Parasite: The Bong Hive keeps rising, and it’s undeniable that Bong Joon-ho’s class warfare satire will be a big player in the Best Picture conversation. It has dominated every Best Foreign Film, Best Original Screenplay and Best Director nomination, and the critics in both NY and LA awarded it, with LAFCA giving it Best Picture. The movie has passed the 20 million dollar benchmark in the US, which made it enter in the Top 10 of the highest grossing foreign films in the country’s history (worldwide, it’s about to pass 130 millions). And while some people compared it to Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma to say that it would run out of fuel without Netflix money, the shock of all shocks happened when Parasite got nominated for Best Ensemble at the SAGs. To put that in context, it’s the second time that a foreign movie got that nomination. The previous one? Life is Beautiful, that ended up with a bunch of Oscar nods (including Best Picture), and gave Roberto Benigni a Best Actor win that we still don’t know if it’s delightful or just plain annoying. It’s clear that the average Academy member likes Parasite better than Roma, and it’s obvious why: it’s more entertaining and accessible, and while the story is rooted in Korean culture, the takedown of capitalism makes it have a global perspective about issues that affect everybody. Now, we have to see if Bong can jump over Tarantino and Scorsese in the next weeks. -Richard Jewell: Well, Clint happened. After a last minute release that had the advantage of old Academy members saving a spot for The Man With No Name, the biopic about the sad tale of the security guard falsely accused of being a bomber opened to just positive reviews, and then suffered a shockingly low opening weekend of 4. 7 million dollars, becoming the worst wide opening of Eastwood’s career (and making things more painful, the movie cost 45 millions). Why did this happen? We can point fingers to the big controversy regarding Olivia Wilde’s portrayal of journalist Kathy Scruggs, who sadly passed away before this movie accused her of being a succubus who traded sex for false tips that ruined Jewell’s life. It didn’t help that Olivia Wilde’s excuses and screenwriter Billy Ray’s conspiracy claims came out to clear nothing. In reality, I believe that what happened has a few more factors. First things first, this movie didn’t star movie draw Clint Eastwood, it starred Paul Walter Hauser, a guy who’s barely known for playing supporting dumb stooges in recent dramedies and Cobra Kai. Second of all, while Clint had success with recent real life stories like Sully (which, again, starred movie star Tom Hanks), Richard Jewell asks people to remember one of the big American news stories from… 1996. And then, finally, we can say that this movie made left-leaning people stay at home between Clint’s attitude and the Kathy Scruggs controversy, while right-leaning people didn’t get the kick out of “owning the libs” that would have been buying tickets for this. Now, the only shot that Jewell has is a far chance for Kathy Bates to get a Best Supporting Actress nomination, but only the Golden Globes back that up. -Rocketman: We all expected the Golden Globe nominations for the Elton John biopic, Taron Egerton's performance and its original song "I'm Gonna Love Me Again" (that has been shortlisted for the Oscars). But it was a pleasant surprise to see Egerton between the five people nominated for Best Actor at the SAGs, and it seems that his campaigning could pay off if he upsets Leo DiCaprio at the Globes. -The Farewell: If there’s a movie that could end up with either several celebrations or absolutely nothing on Oscar nominations morning, it’s the Lulu Wang dramedy based on her family. While Awkwafina has been nominated for Best Actress in both the Golden Globes (which also gave a nod for Best Foreign Language Film, because of dumb rules) and the Critics Choice, the SAGs ignored her, which is concerning in a category where the only people that feel safe are white actresses. Also, Zhao Shuzhen has been ignored by most of the industry awards, so her status is also shaky. Going forward, it looks like Awkwafina has a clear win ahead of her in the Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy category in the Globes, but the HFPA could very easily go “HPFA mode” (which means, some random bullshit like giving the award to Cate Blanchett for Where’d You Go, Bernadette? ). -The Irishman: After all the memes and the debate about the length of Martin Scorsese’s last gangster epic, the film has established somewhat of a frontrunner status by being nominated for every single awards show and obviously winning Best Film with NYFCC. Furthermore, both Joe Pesci (a critics darling) and Al Pacino seem like locks for Best Supporting Actor, and Marty and Thelma Schoonmaker are circling the top of Best Director and Best Editing, respectively. But then, there’s a question mark: Robert De Niro. Up until a few weeks ago, he seemed like a lock for Best Actor, but then he missed the Globes. And after that, he missed the SAGs. Sure, the SAGs are also awarding him with a Lifetime Achievement prize during the ceremony, so he’ll still campaign there, but something’s off and could cause chaos in the Best Actor category. It is what it is. -The Lighthouse: It seems more and more likely that the only Oscar nomination for Robert Eggers’ cabin fever nightmare will go towards Jarin Blaschske’s cinematography, because Willem Dafoe’s “supporting” turn wasn’t recognized by the Golden Globes or the SAGs. Dammit, I wanted the Dafoe streak to keep going. -The Report: Hey, Annette Bening got a Golden Globe nomination! That's likely going to be the only thing that most people remember about this movie that is waiting for you right now in Amazon, sadly. -The Two Popes: Those silly popes, they’re eatin’ da pizza and watching fútbol. Yes, the papal dramedy by Fernando Meirelles is out to the world on Netflix, and we see why old people like this movie. However, the industry is mixed on the awards for this flick, because only the Golden Globes showered the whole movie, with nods to the film, Jonathan Pryce, Anthony Hopkins and modern Mephisto himself, screenwriter Anthony McCarten. It remains to be seen if this tickles the old Academy’s taste, but it’s just outside of the big categories, waiting to strike. -Uncut Gems: The Sandman is back on the big screen, and he’s still a draw. During the wide release of his first theatrical live action movie since Pixels (ugh), Adam Sandler helped the Safdie bros’ new thriller to reach an 18 million dollars 5-day opening weekend, which is a record high opening for distributor A24. Even though Sandler didn’t get love from the Globes or the SAGs, he still is an underdog choice that got the support of the critics (and Critics Choice nods). Now that he has box office to back that up, he still has a small shot. Meanwhile, all of us suckers that live away from the US have to wait to January 31st, when Netflix releases this movie worldwide. -Us: The efforts by Lupita Nyong'o to position herself in the Best Actress race have been working, because her double performance in Jordan Peele's thriller have been recognized by both the critics awards (she got the Best Actress award of the NYFCC, and the runner-up spot for LAFCA) and the SAGs. She is the dark horse candidate in the category, and I'm personally rooting for her. -Waves: Trey Edward Shults' family drama got shut out of every major award this season, and it disappointed at the box office, so unless the new class in the Academy surprises us with Sterling K. Brown or Taylor Russell in the supporting categories, this is it for the A24 release. Technical(ly) contenders: Ad Astra, Avengers: Endgame, Downton Abbey, The Lighthouse. Check the pulse: Just Mercy. This had Oscar buzz: Seberg, The Laundromat, The Goldfinch, Lucy in the Sky, Motherless Brooklyn, The Aeronauts, The Report, Cats, Queen and Slim, Dark Waters, Waves, The King, Honey Boy. Closing question: Will Portrait of a Lady on Fire surprise us in the morning of Oscar nominations?

It is a bittersweet movie that will make you laugh and cry, all at the same time. The sad thing is that it is based on a true story. Poor guy! He was a hero, and did not deserve to be treated so badly.

Probably my least favorite out of all the nominated films. The writing and directing of Olivia Wilde's character, for instance, was absolutely horrendous. I felt like Kathy Bates was one of the bright spots in the film, but her nomination definitely could have gone to someone else. Zhao Shuzhen, maybe, or Thomasin McKenzie in Jojo Rabbit. This was a film that was on my radar from early in the year. I knew that it was doing well at film festivals so it was one that I was waiting to get released. I lucked out when I saw that at the Nightmares Film Festival it was showing for its regional premiere. It was one that I knew I was going to see for sure. The synopsis is a soon-to-be stepmom is snowed in with her fiancé's two children at a remote holiday cabin. Just as relations begin to thaw between the trio, some strange and frightening events takes place.
We start with a mother, Laura (Alicia Silverstone) at home with her two children. Her older son is Aidan (Jaeden Martell) and daughter Mia (Lia McHugh. She has a dollhouse which we learn is modeled after the cabin that they go during the winter. Laura calls her ex-husband, Richard (Richard Armitage) to bring the children over. She's making sure that his new girlfriend won't be there.
She was told that Grace (Riley Keough) wouldn't be, but we see a glimpse of her in a window and then Laura sees her sneaking out the back gate. Through some subtle things, we know that Laura wants to get back together with Richard and is devastated to learn that he plays to ask Grace to marry him. This leads to a traumatic event that rocks this family to the core.
Richard tries to get his children to come around to Grace, but they blame her for what happened. Through them snooping, we learn that Grace has a dark past as her father was the head of a cult and she is the only survivor. Richard tries to have her over for Thanksgiving, but the children lose their minds so he rethinks it.
This all leads to his plan for them to go up to the cabin for Christmas. He still has to work so his plan is to take them up, get them acclimated and then go back, forcing the three to work it out in isolation. There's definitely some awkwardness as Laura decorated the place and there's still things that belonged to her there. They do seem to be making progress until one morning, they wake up to everything they brought is now missing.
Now since this is still a film that hasn't been released just yet and still making the rounds, I wanted to give as much a recap without spoiling anything. I will say that this film definitely lived up to the hype for me. It is such a haunting tale that has a feel of something like Hereditary or Midsommar.
There's an interesting family dynamics here. We have children who are living in broken homes after their parents divorced. They want them to get back together, which is exactly what Laura wants as well. Richard has moved on though. Grace is interesting as I feel like she's a little bit awkward due to her past. Being raised in a cult, she has lasting effects from it.
That's what I really want to delve into next is the religious aspect here. The cult Grace was in was religious based. They took it to the extreme. When they get to the cabin, there's a creepy picture of a nun that looks stern as well as a giant cross. Grace is now at the least agnostic due to the trauma. As she descends into madness, her religious history flares up, which I find quite intriguing.
This film also flirts with is what happening supernatural or is it really happening. I really dug this mystery if I'm going to be perfectly honest. The morning they wake up and everything was before they got there freaked me out. Then every time Grace looks at a certain clock that shows the date, it keeps going back to the same one. This is unnerving and makes her start to think they could have died and are in purgatory. Now this is I guess is a bit of spoiler, but there's a journey to figure out the truth.
That takes me to the pacing of this one, which the runtime clocks in at 100 minutes. I heard the saying that 90 minutes and below are free, anything over that you really have to prove to me it needs to be there. I completely think this film needed that extra time. There was a couple times my jaw actually dropped in shock. I was sucked into this film and trying to figure out what happened. There were things I even missed that were shared with me later that made me like this one even more. With that said, I thought it was paced very well and I like how it ended as I'm down for bleak endings.
Moving to the acting of the film, it is definitely on point. Keough was great as the lead here. I love how subdued she plays the character, but as things around her start to break down we see her descend into madness. She's mentally disturbed from her past and with the stress, we see her reverting. It had me hooked to see. Martell and McHugh did really well as the children also. Martell was made famous from the two It movies but I have to say I'm quite impressed with him for his age. Silverstone and Armitage are solid in support here as well.
As for the effects of the film, we really don't need a lot of them as it isn't that type of film. To be honest though, the realism of them being stranded in this cabin felt real. We do get some practical things later on that looked good. If anything though, this film is shot very well and I was impressed by that for sure.
Now with that aside, despite my high expectations, I felt that this one lived up to them. It is such a haunting film of loss and I really like how they incorporate that this could be supernatural or that it could not be. It is done in a way that doesn't feel like a cheat as well, as we see little hints along the way. The pacing works to build tension and I love how everything ended. The acting was great across the board, which can be tough sticking three characters alone for most of the film. There's not a lot in the way of effects, but it doesn't necessarily need them. It is shot well and the soundtrack fit for what was needed as well. Overall I'd say this is a really good movie and it stuck with me after checking out it. I would recommend this to horror and non-horror fans for sure.
