This photo of the Atlanta Rhythm Section in 1972 shows some typical rock rhythm section instruments: guitars, piano, drums and electric bass. A rhythm section (also called a backup band) is a group of musicians within a music ensemble or band that provides the underlying rhythm, harmony and pulse of the accompaniment, providing a rhythmic and harmonic reference and "beat" for the rest of the band. The rhythm section is often contrasted with the roles of other musicians in the band, such as the lead guitarist or lead vocals whose primary job is to carry the melody. The core elements of the rhythm section are usually percussion instruments, especially the drum kit. The drums and bass provide the basic pulse and groove of a song. The section is augmented by other instruments such as keyboard instruments and guitars that are used to play the chord progression upon which the song is based. The bass instrument (either double bass or electric bass, or another low-register instrument, such as synth bass, depending on the group and its style of music) plays the low-pitched bassline that supports the chord progression, typically by playing a musically interesting bassline that fits with the harmony. The term is common in modern small musical ensembles, such as bands that play jazz, [1] country, blues, and rock. Instruments [ edit] A typical rhythm section comprises one or more guitars (either electric guitars, in rock music bands; acoustic guitars, in country music, folk music and blues or both electric and acoustic in some bands); and/or a keyboard instrument ( piano, electric piano, Hammond organ, synthesizer, etc. ) a double bass or electric bass (depending on the style of music), and drums (usually acoustic, but in some post-1980s styles, the drums may be electronic drums). [1] The bassist, guitarist, drummer, and keyboardist for The Fiery Furnaces. In some styles of music, there may be additional percussionists playing instruments such as the djembe or shakers. Some styles of music often have two electric guitarists, such as rock genres like heavy metal music and punk rock. Some styles of music use multiple keyboard instrument performers simultaneously (e. g., piano and Hammond organ or electric piano and synthesizer) for a fuller sound. A rhythm section could be as small as two or three instruments (e. g., a guitarist and a bassist or a power trio of bass, drums and guitar) or it may be a fairly large ensemble with several keyboardists, several guitarists, auxiliary string players ( mandolin, ukulele, etc. ), a drummer and percussionists. The largest rhythm sections may be led by a bandleader or a conductor who indicates the tempo of each song, starts each song, leads slow-downs of the music at cadences (sections of songs where the music comes to rest on a chord), and indicates when to change soloists and how and when the song will end. The instrumentalists used in a rhythm section vary according to the style of music and era. Modern pop, rock and jazz band rhythm sections typically consist of a drummer, a bass player, and one or more players of chordal instruments (e. g., a pianist, guitarist, etc. ). [2] The term rhythm section may also refer to the instruments in this group (named collectively the "rhythm section instruments"). In music industry parlance, the amplifiers and some of the instruments are nicknamed the " backline. " Backline instruments are commonly provided for bands at music festivals and other concerts where several bands will play during an event. By providing these backline instruments, the changeover process is quickened when new bands take the stage. The backline typically includes large and heavy items that are hard to transport, including large bass amplifiers and guitar amplifiers and their speaker cabinets, the drum kit (usually minus the cymbals and the snare drum, which each drummer brings from home), a Hammond organ, stage piano, and a keyboard amplifier. Even when a venue or festival provides a backline amplification, musicians must still supply some instruments themselves, such as guitars, an electric bass, and, in some cases, the cymbals and/or the snare drum. The venue informs musicians about which instruments are supplied as the backline for a specific concert or stage and in many cases, the contract signed by the band and the venue/promoter contains an explicit list of the backline gear that will be on stage, even specifying brand names and model numbers. Roles [ edit] In modern rock music, a rhythm guitarist specializes in rhythmic and chordal playing (as opposed to the melodic guitar solos and lead melody lines played by the lead guitar), often repeating quaver (eighth-note), half note or whole note chords. In the louder genres, such as hard rock, heavy metal and punk rock, rhythm guitarists often play power chords with distortion. Rhythm guitarists often strum open chords in pop, rock, country and folk music and play barre chords in many pop and rock styles. Although rhythm sections spend much of the time providing accompaniment (backing parts) for songs, in some cases, they provide other musical roles. In some songs or styles of music, instruments from the rhythm section may play soloistic roles on occasion (e. g., improvised guitar solos or solo breaks) or play a melodic role (e. g., a rhythm guitarist may play a lyrical countermelody behind a singer or a melodic intro line before the lead vocalist starts to sing). Since rhythm sections generally provide the background music for lead instruments and solo singers, rhythm sections are typically not as prominent as a singer or soloist. However, since rhythm sections provide the underpinning for a good performance by the lead instruments and vocalists, good rhythm sections are valued in the music industry. Some of the most accomplished rhythm sections have become famous, such as The Band, the E Street Band and Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare (the latter in reggae). In some popular bands, all of the band members, including rhythm section members, have become famous as individuals (e. g., the rhythm section members of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, etc. ). In almost all genres of popular music and traditional music that use rhythm sections, ranging from rock to country to jazz, the rhythm section members are expected to be able to improvise (make up) their parts or prepare their own parts for a given song by listening to the CD at home. Once the bassist and chord-playing instruments are provided with the chord progression on a lead sheet (in which chords are typically named using the root note of the chord and its quality; e. g., C Major, d minor, G7, etc. ), they are expected to be able to improvise or prepare a bass line and chord voicings, respectively, that suit the style of the song. In each style of music, there are different musical approaches and styles that rhythm section members are expected to use. For example, in a country music song, the guitarist will be expected to be able to perform a chord progression using an intricate fingerpicking style; in a heavy metal song, the guitarist will be expected to play power chords and complex, precise rhythmic patterns; in a jazz song, a guitarist will be expected to be able to play "jazz voicings" of the chords, which emphasize the third, seventh and often the sixth or ninth chord tones (this contrasts with the barre chord voicings used in pop and rock, which emphasize the root, fifth, and to a lesser degree, the third of the chord). Drummers and percussionists are expected to be able to improvise or prepare rhythm parts that suit the style of a given song. In some cases, an arranger, orchestrator or composer will provide a written-out bass part or drum part written in music notation (the five-line staff in which the notes are round symbols with or without stems). It is rare in jazz or rock for chords to be written out in music notation; the arranger or songwriter typically writes the chord symbol and expects the guitarist to improvise the appropriate chord voicing. Other roles [ edit] Rhythm section members may be expected to sing backup vocals or harmony parts in some styles of music. In some styles of music, notably 2010s-era pop, hip hop music and funk, rhythm section members may be required to perform a rhythmic dance routine, which may range from a simple body movement to a complex dance choreography that requires significant dance skills. In some types of heavy metal music, rhythm section members (guitar, bass, drums) may be expected to be able to "headbang" (move their head in an up and down fashion in time with the beat) while performing. Less commonly, some rhythm section members may sing lead vocals (e. g., Phil Collins or Sting). In some groups, one rhythm section member may have other roles, such as bandleader (e. g., jazz bassist Charles Mingus), conductor (often the case in 2010s-era musical theatre shows), songwriter, composer or arranger. Components [ edit] Jazz [ edit] Two members of Duke Ellington 's rhythm section at the Hurricane Ballroom: a jazz guitarist and an upright bass player. In the case of swing bands, the classic rhythm section comprises a quartet of electric guitar, piano, double bass, and drums; a noted example is that of the Count Basie Orchestra with Freddie Green, the Count, Walter Page, and Jo Jones. Earlier jazz bands had used banjo in place of guitar, and other bass instruments such as the tuba for recording purposes prior to the advent of microphone technology in studios. As bebop evolved, smaller jazz groups dropped the guitar, and many free jazz ensembles dropped the piano as well. Auxiliary percussion such as claves, bongos or maracas can also be used, especially in music influenced by strains from Latin America such as salsa and samba. In theory any instrument or instruments can provide a steady rhythm: for example, in the trio led by Jimmy Giuffre the late 1950s, the clarinet, valve trombone and guitar all switched between lead and supporting roles. In the 1950s, some jazz bandleaders began to replace the double bass with the then-newly invented electric bass. However, the electric bass really made a big impact on jazz in the 1970s, with the advent of jazz rock and jazz fusion. The electric bass was much easier to amplify to stadium-filling volumes using large bass speaker cabinets and amplifiers than an upright bass. The electric bass also began to be used as an expressive solo instrument, as exemplified by the performances of Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke. In the 1970s, the main chordal rhythm instruments were often electric instruments such as the Rhodes electric piano or electric clavinet, often run through effects units such as fuzz, phasers, or wah-wah pedals and amplified through loud keyboard amplifiers. The jazz fusion rhythm section followed the lead of the rock rhythm sections of the era, and used banks of speakers and powerful amplifiers to create a massive sound large enough for stadium concerts. In the later 1980s and subsequent decades, jazz fusion bands such as the Chick Corea Elektric Band used synthesizers in the rhythm section, both for chordal accompaniment and for synth bass parts. R&B, rock and pop [ edit] This Polish group's rhythm section consists of a Hammond organist, an electric bassist, and a drummer. R&B and rock and roll groups in the 1950s emphasized rhythm, so their backup bands generally consisted only of the standard swing band rhythm section of guitar, piano, bass, and drums supporting a vocalist, and in some cases omitting the keyboards. The bass guitar took over from the double bass in the 1950s, and had almost completely taken over the bass role in the 1960s. As the 1960s progressed the term "rhythm section" as used in a pop music context sometimes came to refer to just the bass and drums. For example, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr of the Beatles were referred to as the band's rhythm section. In the 1970s, chordal instruments such as the electric and/or acoustic guitar and various keyboards (piano, electric piano, Hammond organ, clavinet) continued to be used to augment the bass and drums in soul, funk, and reggae groups. The sound of late 1960s and 1970s rhythm sections was often given a unique tone and sound due to the use of effects units. Funk bass players would play through auto-wah or envelope follower pedals. Reggae guitarists would plug into echo pedals. Rock guitarists would run their electric guitars through distortion and wah pedals. Electric piano or clavinet players also used effects. In the 1980s, many rock and pop bands continued to be based around the basic rock rhythm section established by 1960s and 1970s bands: electric bass, drums, and electric guitar or keyboards. In the 1980s, the first widely-affordable digital synthesizer, Yamaha 's DX7, was released. The distinctive FM synthesis tone of the DX7 is a key part of the sound of many 1980s pop and dance singles. As electronic effects became more sophisticated, with the development of digital signal processing, during the 1980s, there was some crossover between the roles played by electronic keyboards and electric guitar. Even though electronic keyboards or organs were the standard instruments used to create sustained "pads" of sound (e. g., held backing chords) for ballads, with the introduction of digital delay pedals and other modern effects, electric guitars could produce similar "pads" or " walls of sound ". The Edge, the guitarist from the rock band U2, often used digital delay and reverb-drenched electric guitar arpeggios (chords played one note after the other) to create a shimmering, sustained "pad" for the group. These arpeggio pads created a sustained sound that was similar to the sound of an electronic keyboard. By the late 1980s, the price of digital effects pedals dropped, making these effects units available to the general public. During the 1980s era, rhythm sections in some styles of pop took an increasing turn towards electronic instruments. A 1980s-era dance pop band might be backed up by a rhythm section of a synth bass, electronic drums (or drum machine) and various synthesizer keyboards. In some 1980s and 1990s bands, live human rhythm sections were sometimes replaced by sequenced MIDI synthesizer rhythm tracks made in the studio. In the 1980s and 1990s, the roots rock scene went in the opposite direction from dance pop; roots rock favoured traditional instruments in the rhythm section such as acoustic piano, acoustic guitar, mandolin, pedal steel guitar, acoustic bass guitar and upright bass. Another 1980s-era trend that helped revive interest in acoustic instruments was the " MTV Unplugged " style of performances, in which a rock band performs with acoustic instruments, including acoustic guitars and an acoustic bass guitar. In rock and pop, rhythm sections range in size from the barest, stripped-down size of the " power trio " (guitarist, bassist, and drummer) and the organ trio (Hammond organist, drummer, and a third instrument) to large rhythm sections with several stringed instrument players (mandolin, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, etc. ), multiple keyboard players (e. g., piano, Hammond organ, electric piano, synth), two instruments playing a bass role (e. g., bass guitar and synth bass) and a group of auxiliary percussionists (congas, shakers, etc. ) to fill out (or "sweeten") the sound. Some rhythm sections combine electronic/digital instruments that are sequenced, pre-recorded backup tracks and live instruments (including electric, electronic and acoustic instruments). Musical roles [ edit] Jazz is one of the styles that often features rhythm section members on solos. The drums and bass both supply a rhythmic pulse for the music, and the bass instrument supplies a harmonic foundation with a bassline. The types of basslines performed by the bass guitarist vary widely from one style of music to another. Despite all of the differences in the styles of bassline in most styles of popular music, the bass guitarist fulfills a similar role: anchoring the harmonic framework (often by emphasizing the roots of the chord progression) and laying down the beat (in collaboration with the drummer). The importance of the bass guitarist and the bass line varies in different styles of music. In some pop styles, such as 1980s-era pop and musical theater, the bass sometimes plays a relatively simple part, and the music forefronts the vocals and melody instruments. In contrast, in reggae or funk, entire songs may be centered around the bass groove, and the bassline is very prominent in the mix. Similarly, the role of the drummer varies a great deal from one style of music to another. In some types of music, such as traditional 1950s-style country music, the drummer has a rudimentary "timekeeping" role, and the drums are placed low in the mix by the sound engineers. In styles such as progressive rock, metal, and jazz fusion, the drummers often perform complex, challenging parts, and the drums may be given a prominent placement in the mix; as well, the drummer may be often given prominent solo breaks, fills, or introductions that put the spotlight on their technical skills and musicality. In the more experimental forms of free jazz and jazz fusion, the drummer may not play the strict "timekeeping" role that is associated with drums in pop music. Instead, the drums may be used more to create textured polyrhythmic soundscapes. In this type of situation, the main pulse is often provided by the bass player rather than the drummer. The rhythm section members sometimes break out of their accompaniment role when they are asked to perform keyboard solos, bass breaks, or drum solos. In genres such as progressive rock, art rock, or progressive metal, the rhythm section members may play complicated parts along with the lead guitar (or vocalist) and perform extended solos. In jazz groups and jazz fusion bands, the rhythm section members are often called on to perform improvised solos. In jazz, the drummer may "trade" short solo sections with a saxophone player or trumpet player; this practice, nicknamed "trading fours", typically involves the drummer and the horn player alternating four bar solo sections during a jazz tune. They can also trade eights, twos, ones, or other numbers depending on the musical context. Variants [ edit] Organ trios [ edit] In organ trios, the lower octaves of a Hammond organ or electronic keyboard are used as a substitute for bass guitar or double bass. The organist can play the bassline using the bass pedal keyboard or using the lower manual. As well, the organist could play right-hand chords and melodies. Organ trios were a widely used type of jazz ensemble in the 1950s and 1960s to play hard bop. Organ trios are sometimes used in rock as well. The Doors ' keyboardist Ray Manzarek used a keyboard bass to play the bass lines. Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore would act as an organ trio with the addition of singer Jim Morrison. Dixieland bands [ edit] Dixieland band rhythm sections sometimes use a tuba for the bassline. New Orleans or Dixieland jazz bands occasionally use tuba, sousaphone, or bass saxophone in place of the double bass that was common in 1920s-era jazz bands. This tradition developed from the origins of New Orleans music in marching bands, which used instruments that could be carried on harnesses or with straps. Marching bands use a mixture of brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments, because all of these instruments can be played while marching. Other variants [ edit] Not all rhythm sections follow the standard model of drummer-bassist-chordal instrument. Some bands have no drummer. In bands without a drummer, one or more instruments from the rhythm section often play in styles that replace the drum kit role—that is laying down the beat and backbeat. Traditional bluegrass bands typically do not have a drummer. In bluegrass bands, the timekeeping role is shared between several instruments: the upright bass generally plays the on-beats while the mandolin plays chop chords on the off-beats, with the banjo also keeping a steady eighth note rhythm. This distributed nature allows for rhythmic continuity while players take turns highlighting the melody. In funk-oriented groups that do not have a drummer, the electric bass player may take over some of the drummer's role by using slap bass. With slap bass, the bassist slaps the low strings to create a strong "thump" (similar to the bass drum's role) and "snaps" or "pops" the high strings to create a percussive effect (the latter takes over some of the role played by the hi-hat cymbals). In some bands, there may be no bass player—the basslines may be played by the piano player, synth player, or guitarist. Using a guitar player to provide basslines is particularly effective if a guitar player has a seven-string guitar with a low "B" string. Some jazz duos consist of a singer accompanied by a single piano player. In these duos, the jazz piano player has a challenging task; they have to provide all of the rhythmic and harmonic foundation that would normally be provided by a full rhythm section. A jazz pianist accompanying a singer in a duo needs to play a deep bassline, chords, and fill-in melody lines while the singer is performing. The pianist often improvises an instrumental solo in between vocal melodies. References [ edit].

I honestly didn't even know they still made Playmobil toys, let alone made a MOVIE about them

Playmobil the movie box office. I think this movie was cool since... After the huge success LEGO had at the box office with films such as 'The Lego Movie' and 'The Lego Batman Movie' the in some ways similar German toy brand 'Playmobil' announced production on their very own first cinematic adventure, in honour of the toy line's 45th anniversary.
When her younger brother Charlie (Gabriel Bateman) unexpectedly disappears into the magical, animated universe of PLAYMOBIL, unprepared Marla (Anya Taylor-Joy) must go on a quest of a lifetime to bring him home. As she sets off on a fantastic journey across stunning new worlds, Marla teams up with some unlikely and heroic new friends - the smooth-talking food truck driver Del (voiced by Jim Gaffigan) the dashing and charismatic secret agent Rex Dasher (voiced by Daniel Radcliffe) a wholehearted misfit robot, an extravagant fairy-godmother (voiced by Meghan Trainor) and many more. Through their vibrant adventure, Marla and Charlie realise that no matter how life plays out, you can achieve anything when you believe in yourself.
Admittedly, this film looked like a bad idea from the start, looking too much like a cheap knock-off of any of those Lego-movies, with a smaller budget, coming from a smaller studio. Also, Playmobil isn't as big of a brand as LEGO is and with no brand awareness, how do you start promoting this worldwide? The film though, borrowing gags from other franchises such as 'Star Wars. a clear nod to Jabba the Hutt in form of Glinara; James Bond' look-a-like Rex Dasher; a colosseum warrior battle such as in 'Thor: Ragnarok' and a fairy wonderland in the likes of 'Shrek' isn't as bad as initially presumed. Luckily, the demographic this is intended for - 4 to 10-year olds - has a wild imagination, and with worlds such as "City of the Future" and "Dino Jungle" their magical fantasies are coming true on the screen.
The crew who worked on Disney's 'The Princess and the Frog' and 'Home on the Range' wrote this live action/animation-hybrid adventure musical, taking a little bit too much time to get to the final big battle to get our siblings back to the real world, which could challenge the smallest of children to stay seated. The constant action and sugared colour palette will for sure give parents a sugar rush they'll need to recover from, but most modern animated shows are way worse in terms of hyperactive screaming and fart-jokes. At least most of the jokes in 'Playmobil: The Movie' are enough thought through to make this enjoyable for both kids and their parents.
What might surprise audiences, is the musical aspect of the film. There's about six very catchy songs, sung by the voice actors themselves, with the very first song performed in the real world by Anya Taylor-Joy (Glass) which reminded me of Lizzie McGuire, with a bubbly attitude, dreaming of traveling and exploring the world. The songs fit perfectly in the story and usually get performed when we enter a new section of the ever stretching make-believe world of Playmobil. The voice actors aren't known for their singing - besides Adam Lambert (who is having so much fun being overly theatrical with his voice) and Meghan Trainor - but do a decent job at making it their own.
The clear message of being able to achieve anything, as long as you believe in yourself is a bit on the nose, but this doesn't take away the fact that this harmless effervescent story will appeal to many kids with dreams such as Marla's. The film screams to be made into a franchise, let's just hope they learn from their shortcomings and the mistakes other toy brands have made before when taking the Hollywood-path.

Idi i smotri review. Come and See directed by Elem Klimov is by far one of the most powerfully captured, heartbreaking, and eye-opening films I have ever seen. It made me sleep with unease for 3 nights straight. Klimov captured every emotion out of me in: I laughed, I cried, I screamed, I yelled, I clenched my teeth. This movie also teased my 5 senses: I tasted the mud in the swamp as Florya and Glasha were struggling to get across. I smelt the fire from barn in the small village, while people were burning inside, and Nazis were laughing. I heard the flies buzzing around Florya's home giving off a sense of death, decay, and abandonment. I saw Florya go from the primal immature young boy, to an old man in a matter of days. I could feel the hardship, the sadness, the love that Florya felt for Glasha, and the Resistance coming to life.
Klimov's timing in making this movie is very pertinent because in 1985 the world was amidst a Nuclear Holocaust. This movie helps to show the reality of war, the resistance against war, and the toll that it has on every person. Aleksei Rodionov's cinematic elements really brought this movie alive. Each shot was filmed so impressively with illustrations and truth brought out in a significant matter. The death of the cow, the bombs falling out of the sky, the transformation of Florya was all captured effectively. Klimov was not afraid of exposing the truth no matter how foul and dehumanizing it was. Having Rodionov as his cinematographer helped assure that the story would not miss guide the viewer, rather assure the audience of the Nazi cruelty and the Russian Resistance. One scene in particular that was very emotional was the burning of the people in the small village. At that moment I had to hide my face and say to myself, this is just a movie…this is just a movie." Right as I turned back the camera zooms to the door and people are knocking at it vigorously, showing the reality of the situation and that people were actually in there. If Rodionov had not panned to the door, I could have blocked out the memory and the pain rather than having to feel even more uncomfortable and shocked, as they wanted us to feel. You can see the recklessness of the Nazi's and their inhuman ways in multiple encounters in this movie; they treat the Russians like animals, like scum on their feet. However the Resistance Movement of Russian comes to beat them. The last scene was cinematography at its finest, with the camera taking its own path to find snow on the ground assuring the audience of the defeat, because Russian's always win war when winter comes along.
Florya played brilliantly by Aleksey Kravchenko is an interesting character. He passionately wanted a gun, and to fight in the war but is left behind. The war breaks out in front of him anyway and ends up changing his life forever. I don't think he realizes exactly why he wanted to fight until he saw in his very own eyes what had been happening. The Nazi's felt nothing from this little boy, as they felt for the old lady however he was a big part to their downfall and deaths. He never shoots his gun until the end when he fervently shoots the Hitler photo. All of his anger and rage came out in that last moment, which also showed a reverse montage of Hitler taking him back to when he was a kid, explaining that being a child is how everything starts. Florya is no longer was the 'newcomer' and after this long painful experience he decides to go with this people and continue the fight. The musical score and sound track also was a masterpiece in itself. The flies buzzing, the sound of the bombs stinging in Florya's ears, and taking the music from the beautiful Mozart to create an essence of dramatic cinema and is purely accomplished.
This movie is by far a must see…If you thought you have seen the best of war films, think again. I highly recommend Come and See, to wake up your mind and realize the reality of the war.

I think the scene illustrates a Nietzche quote/idea. He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you.

And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. ” Invoking Death and Hell was precisely the intention of Elem Klimov, who experienced the brutalities of war as a child in Stalingrad, and his cowriter Ales Adamovich, who fought as a partisan in Belorussia and witnessed the systematic burning of hundreds of villages and the massive extermination of civilians. To mark the 40th anniversary of the Great Victory, they wanted to remind the world of the fascist genocide in Belorussia that resulted in over one million deaths, and did so in the most visceral, hyper-realistic style possible that is nevertheless graced with a strange, terrible lyricism. Their harrowing journey through hell, as seen through the eyes of a teenage Belarussian partisan, exploded like a bomb upon its release both in Soviet Union and abroad, and quickly gained fame as one of the greatest antiwar pictures of all times.

Yanchenko Cinematography A. Rodionov Edited by V. Belova Production company Mosfilm Belarusfilm Distributed by Sovexportfilm Release date July 1985 ( Moscow) Running time 142 minutes [1] Country Soviet Union [2] Language Belarusian Russian German Come and See ( Russian: Иди и смотри, Idi i smotri; Belarusian: Ідзі і глядзі, Idzi i hlyadzi) is a 1985 Belarusian film directed by Elem Klimov filmed in the Soviet Union, with a screenplay written by Klimov and Ales Adamovich based on the 1978 book I Am from the Fiery Village [3] (original title: Я из огненной деревни, [4] Ya iz ognennoj Derevni, 1977) by Adamovich et al.. [5] The film stars Aleksei Kravchenko and Olga Mironova. [6] Come and See is generally viewed as one of the most important anti-war movies ever made, and one of the great World War II movies, with the most historically accurate depictions of the crimes on the Eastern Front. The film focuses upon the Nazi German occupation of Belarus, and primarily upon the events witnessed by a young Belarusian partisan teenager named Flyora, who—against his parents' wishes—joins the Belarusian resistance movement, and thereafter depicts the Nazi atrocities and human suffering inflicted upon the Eastern European villages' populace. The film mixes hyper-realism with an underlying surrealism, and philosophical existentialism with poetical, psychological, political and apocalyptic themes. Come and See had to fight eight years of censorship from the Soviet authorities before the film was finally allowed to be produced in its entirety to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II, and was a major box-office hit, with 28, 900, 000 admissions in the Soviet Union alone. The film was selected as the Soviet entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 58th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. [7] Title [ edit] The original Belarusian title of the film derives from Chapter 6 of The Apocalypse of John, where in the first, third, fifth, and seventh verse is written "ідзі і глядзі" [8] (English: "Come and see", Greek: Ἐρχου καὶ ἴδε, Erchou kai ide) [9] as an invitation to look upon the destruction caused by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. [10] [11] Chapter 6, verses 7–8 have been cited as being particularly relevant to the film: And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see! And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. Plot [ edit] In 1943, two Byelorussian boys dig in a sand-filled trench looking for abandoned rifles in order to join the Soviet partisan forces. Their village elder warns them not to dig up the weapons as it will arouse the suspicions of the Germans. One of the boys, Flyora, finds an SVT-40 rifle, though the both of them are seen by an Fw 189 flying overhead. The next day, partisans arrive at Flyora's house to conscript him. Flyora becomes a low-rank militiaman and is ordered to perform menial tasks. When the partisans are ready to move on, an old partisan says that he wants to stay behind because his boots are falling apart. The partisan commander, Kosach, orders the old man to swap boots with Flyora and for Flyora to remain behind at the camp. Bitterly disappointed, Flyora walks into the forest weeping and meets Glasha, a young girl working as a nurse in the camp, and the two bond before the camp is suddenly attacked by German paratroopers and dive bombers. Flyora is partially deafened from explosions before the two hide in the forest to avoid the German soldiers. Flyora and Glasha travel to his village, only to find his home deserted and covered in flies. Denying that his family is dead, Flyora believes that they are hiding on a nearby island across a bog. As they run from the village in the direction of the bogland, Glasha glances across her shoulder, seeing a pile of executed villagers' bodies stacked behind a house, but does not alert Flyora. The two become hysterical after wading through the bog, where Glasha then screams at Flyora that his family are actually dead in the village. They are soon met by Roubej, a partisan fighter, who takes them to a large group of villagers who have fled the Germans. Flyora sees the village elder, badly burnt by the Germans, who tells him that he witnessed his family's execution and that he should not have dug up the rifles. Flyora accepts that his family is dead and blames himself for the tragedy. Roubej takes Flyora and two other men to find food at a nearby warehouse, only to find it being guarded by German troops. During their retreat, the group unknowingly wanders through a minefield resulting in the deaths of the two companions. That evening Roubej and Flyora sneak up to an occupied village and manage to steal a cow from a collaborating farmer. However, as they escape across an open field, Roubej and the cow are shot and killed by a German machine gun. The next morning, Flyora attempts to steal a horse and cart but the owner catches him and instead of doing him harm, he helps hide Flyora's identity when SS troops approach. Flyora is taken to the village of Perekhody, where they hurriedly discuss a fake identity for him, while the SS unit (based on the Dirlewanger Brigade) accompanied by Ukrainian collaborators surround and occupy the village. Flyora tries to warn the townsfolk they are being herded to their deaths, but is forced to join them inside a church. Flyora and a young woman bearing a strong resemblance to Glasha manage to escape; the young woman is dragged by her hair across the ground and into a truck to be gang raped, while Flyora is forced to watch as grenades are thrown into the church before it is set ablaze and shot. A German officer points a gun to Flyora's head to pose for a picture before leaving him to slump to the ground as the soldiers leave. Flyora later wanders out of the scorched village in the direction of the Germans, where he discovers they had been ambushed by the partisans. After recovering his jacket and rifle, Flyora comes across the young woman who had also escaped the church in a fugue state and covered in blood after having been gang-raped and brutalized. Flyora returns to the village and finds that his fellow partisans have captured eleven of the Germans and their collaborators, including the commander, an SS-Sturmbannführer. While some of the captured men including the commander plead for their lives and deflect blame, a young fanatical officer bluntly tells the captors that their people have no right to exist and they will carry out their mission. Kosach then forces most of the collaborators to douse the Germans with a can of petrol but the disgusted crowd shoots them all before they can be set on fire. As the partisans leave, Flyora notices a framed portrait of Adolf Hitler in a puddle and proceeds to shoot it numerous times. As he does so, a montage of clips from Hitler's life play in reverse, but when Hitler is shown as a baby on his mother 's lap, Flyora stops shooting and cries. “ We are obliged to exterminate the population—this is part of our mission to protect the German population. I have the right to destroy millions of people of a lower race who breed like worms. ” —  Adolf Hitler, 1941 [12] In the final scene, a partisan officer calls out to a low-ranking recruit. Flyora turns, but an obedient youth nearby rushes past him, and Flyora realizes he is now a full partisan. He then catches up and blends in with his comrades, marching through the woods as snow blankets the ground. As they disappear into the birch forest, a title informs: "628 Belorussian villages were destroyed, along with all their inhabitants. " [13] Cast [ edit] Aleksey Kravchenko as Flyora Olga Mironova as Glasha/Glafira Liubomiras Laucevičius as Kosach (voiced by Valeriy Kravchenko) Vladas Bagdonas as Roubej Jüri Lumiste as young German officer Evgeniy Tilicheev as Ukrainian collaborator and translator Viktor Lorents as the German commander Production and release [ edit] Klimov co-wrote the screenplay with Ales Adamovich, who fought with the Belarusian partisans as a teenager. According to the director's recollections, work on the film began in 1977: The 40th anniversary of the Great Victory was approaching. [3] [14] [15] The management had to be given something topical. I had been reading and rereading the book I Am from the Fiery Village, which consisted of the first-hand accounts of people who miraculously survived the horrors of the fascist genocide in Belorussia. Many of them were still alive then, and Belorussians managed to record some of their memories onto film. I will never forget the face and eyes of one peasant, and his quiet recollection about how his whole village had been herded into a church, and how just before they were about to be burned, an officer gave them the offer: "Whoever has no children can leave". And he couldn't take it, he left, and left behind his wife and little kids... or about how another village was burned: the adults were all herded into a barn, but the children were left behind. And later, the drunk men surrounded them with sheepdogs and let the dogs tear the children to pieces. And then I thought: the world doesn't know about Khatyn! They know about Katyn, about the massacre of the Polish officers there. But they don't know about Belorussia. Even though more than 600 villages were burned there! And I decided to make a film about this tragedy. I perfectly understood that the film would end up a harsh one. I decided that the central role of the village lad Flyora would not be played by a professional actor, who upon immersion into a difficult role could have protected himself psychologically with his accumulated acting experience, technique and skill. I wanted to find a simple boy fourteen years of age. We had to prepare him for the most difficult experiences, then capture them on film. And at the same time, we had to protect him from the stresses so that he wasn't left in the loony bin after filming was over, but was returned to his mother alive and healthy. Fortunately, with Aleksey Kravchenko, who played Flyora and who later became a good actor, everything went smoothly. I understood that this would be a very brutal film and that it was unlikely that people would be able to watch it. I told this to my screenplay coauthor, the writer Ales Adamovich. But he replied: "Let them not watch it, then. This is something we must leave after us. As evidence of war, and as a plea for peace. " —  Elem Klimov Come and See was shot only on Belarusian soil. The events with the people, the peasants, actually happened as shown in the film. [It] doesn't have any professional actors. Even the language spoken in the film is Belarusian. What was important was that all the events depicted in the film really did happen in Belarus. [17] For eight years, [14] filming could not begin because the State Committee for Cinematography (Goskino) would not accept the screenplay, considering it too realistic, calling it propaganda for the "aesthetics of dirtiness" and "naturalism". [16] Eventually in 1984, Klimov was able to start filming without having compromised to any censorship at all. The only change became the name of the film itself, which was changed to Come and See from the original title, Kill Hitler [18] (Elem Klimov also says this in the 2006 UK DVD release). [19] The film was shot in chronological order over a period of nine months. [18] Aleksey Kravchenko said that he underwent "the most debilitating fatigue and hunger. I kept a most severe diet, and after the filming was over I returned to school not only thin, but grey-haired. " [20] [18] To prepare the 13-year-old Kravchenko for the role, Klimov called a hypnotist. " I realized I had to inject him with content which he did not possess, Mr. Klimov said. This is an age when a boy does not know what true hatred is, what true love is. In the end, Mr. Kravchenko was able to concentrate so intensely that it seemed as if he had hypnotized himself for the role. " [21] [18] To create the maximum sense of immediacy, realism, hyperrealism, and surrealism operate in equal measure. [22] Klimov and his cameraman Rodionov employed naturalistic colours, widescreen and lots of Steadicam shots; the film is full of extreme close-ups of faces, does not flinch from the unpleasant details of burnt flesh and bloodied corpses, and the guns were often loaded with live ammunition as opposed to blanks. [3] [18] [23] [24] Aleksey Kravchenko mentioned in interviews that bullets sometimes passed just 4 inches (10 centimeters) above his head [18] (such as in the cow scene). [3] At the same time "the mise-en-scène is fragmentary and disjointed: there are discontinuities between shots as characters appear in close up and then disappear off camera. " "Klimov employs a range of techniques that draws attention to the camera. The extreme close-ups of actors staring into camera is a recurring motif. " "Elsewhere... the moment of revelation is marked by a disorienting zoom-in/dolly-out shot". [3] The film was released on 17 October 1985, [6] drawing 28. 9 million viewers [18] [25] and ranking sixth at the box office of 1986. [25] In 2017, the film received an official restoration which won the Venice classics award for Best restored film, and was also shown in several European independent cinemas again. [26] [27] [28] In the United States, Kino Lorber released the film on DVD in 2001. It is currently out-of-print. As of September 2019, the film became available on the streaming service for the Criterion Collection, the Criterion Channel. On December 18, 2019, Janus Films released a trailer for an upcoming 2k-restoration that’s expected to premiere in February of 2020 with a theatrical run and then, possibly, a restored home media release through Criterion. [29] [30] [31] Music [ edit] The original soundtrack is rhythmically amorphous music composed by Oleg Yanchenko. At a few key points in the film classical music from mainly German or Austrian composers are used, such as Johann Strauss Jr. 's Blue Danube, sometimes mixed in with Yanchenko's music. The Soviet marching song The Sacred War, Russian folk song Korobeiniki and German folk song Im Wald im grünen Walde are played in the movie once. The German military march "Old Comrades " is played as the German army begins its attack on the village. During the scene where Glasha dances, the background music is taken from Grigori Aleksandrov 's 1936 film Circus. At the end, during the montage, music by Richard Wagner is used, most notably the Tannhäuser Overture and the Ride from Die Walküre. At the conclusion of the film the Lacrimosa from Mozart 's Requiem is played. Themes [ edit] It has often been noted how the film mixes a ruthless "hyper-realistic" take on the Holocaust during Operation Barbarossa, while at the same time hinting an underlying surrealist atmosphere without being "unreal". [32] [33] [34] [35] [36] [37] The image of Hitler shown in the film as a baby sitting on the maternal knees has no historical foundation. It is a photomontage devised by Klimov between this picture of infant Hitler and that of his mother A Focke-Wulf Fw 189, the aircraft that Klimov makes fly high above the protagonists' head The film mixes themes about philosophical existentialism, spiritual degradation, the human mind, etc, under Nazi carnage, extreme trauma, and also the politics behind the Nazi-German warfare, —with often poetic, classical apocalyptic themes, influences and "twilight state-like" or nightmarish, psychological dialogues. [38] [39] [40] [41] [42] [43] The film has been praised for how it shows one of human history's worst crimes with an honest and genuine take, rather than the more common, sentimental "Hollywood take" on the subject. The film's settings is often in vast, deep Belorussian forests and swamps. The nature (with both the hostility and fear and the peacefulness and beauty that can be found in it) plays a big role in the movie's symbolism and atmosphere. Politically it deals with the people's suffering under the Nazi invasion, and the essence and depth of the people's (both collective and individual) trauma, and also honoring the defense of the Slavic nations by partisans. As an anti-fascist and anti-war movie it brings up the ideological driving-forces behind the war on (and Holocaust in) Eastern Europe; i. e the Nazis' racial ideological hatred for so-called " Judeo-Bolshevism " as one of the main motives behind their genocides against Jews and Slavs. Come and See has been praised for the way it shows the Nazis on the Eastern Front as genocidal as they historically documented were, and for how it brings out the genuine sense of terror that people in reality felt with the mere presence of those forces. It shows their systematic calculated killings and their discretionary sadism. Klimov is said to make the viewer understand, and sense, what Fascism brought, in a metaphor of a "black plague", in similar style to the partisan song "The Sacred War" and it's lyrics' description of it (i. e "the fascist hordes' black wings" and similar writings), which is also featured in the film. The movie is generally viewed as one of the most important anti-war movies ever made, one of the great movies in history and one with the most historically accurate depictions of the crimes on the Eastern Front, and in general one of the most important Holocaust movies. [44] [45] [46] [47] [48] [49] Reception [ edit] Initial reception was positive. Walter Goodman wrote for The New York Times that "The history is harrowing and the presentation is graphic... Powerful material, powerfully rendered... ", and dismissed the ending as "a dose of instant inspirationalism, " but conceded to Klimov's "unquestionable talent. " [50] Rita Kempley of the Washington Post wrote that "directing with an angry eloquence, [Klimov] taps into that hallucinatory nether world of blood and mud and escalating madness that Francis Ford Coppola found in Apocalypse Now. And though he draws a surprisingly vivid performance from his inexperienced teen lead, Klimov's prowess is his visual poetry, muscular and animistic, like compatriot Andrei Konchalovsky 's in his epic Siberiade. " [51] Mark Le Fanu wrote in Sight & Sound 03/01/1987 that Come and See is a "powerful war film... The director has elicited an excellent performance from his central actor Kravchenko". [52] [53] [54] [55] [56] [57] According to Klimov, the film was so shocking for audiences, however, that ambulances were sometimes called in to take away particularly impressionable viewers, both in the Soviet Union and abroad. [14] [19] Also according to Klimov, during one of the after-the-film discussions, an elderly German stood up and said: "I was a soldier of the Wehrmacht; moreover, an officer of the Wehrmacht. I traveled through all of Poland and Belarus, finally reaching Ukraine. I will testify: everything that is told in this film is the truth. And the most frightening and shameful thing for me is that this film will be seen by my children and grandchildren". [58] The film has since been widely acclaimed in the 21st century. In 2001, Daneet Steffens of Entertainment Weekly wrote that "Klimov alternates the horrors of war with occasional fairy tale-like images; together they imbue the film with an unapologetically disturbing quality that persists long after the credits roll. " [59] In 2001, J. Hoberman of The Village Voice reviewed Come and See, writing the following: "Directed for baroque intensity, Come and See is a robust art film with aspirations to the visionary – not so much graphic as leisurely literal-minded in its representation of mass murder. (The movie has been compared both to Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, and it would not be surprising to learn that Steven Spielberg had screened it before making either of these. ) The film's central atrocity is a barbaric circus of blaring music and barking dogs in which a squadron of drunken German soldiers round up and parade the peasants to their fiery doom... The bit of actual death-camp corpse footage that Klimov uses is doubly disturbing in that it retrospectively diminishes the care with which he orchestrates the town's destruction. For the most part, he prefers to show the Gorgon as reflected in Perseus 's shield. There are few images more indelible than the sight of young Alexei Kravchenko's fear-petrified expression. " [60] In the same publication in 2009, Elliott Stein described Come and See as "a startling mixture of lyrical poeticism and expressionist nightmare. " [61] In 2002, Scott Tobias of The A. V. Club wrote that Klimov's "impressions are unforgettable: the screaming cacophony of a bombing run broken up by the faint sound of a Mozart fugue, a dark, arid field suddenly lit up by eerily beautiful orange flares, German troops appearing like ghosts out of the heavy morning fog. A product of the glasnost era, Come and See is far from a patriotic memorial of Russia's hard-won victory. Instead, it's a chilling reminder of that victory's terrible costs. " [62] British magazine The Word wrote that " Come and See is widely regarded as the finest war film ever made, though possibly not by Great Escape fans. " [63] Tim Lott wrote in 2009 that the film "makes Apocalypse Now look lightweight". [64] In 2006, Geoffrey Macnab of Sight & Sound opined, "Klimov's astonishing war movie combines intense lyricism with the kind of violent bloodletting that would make even Sam Peckinpah pause. " [3] [ failed verification] On 16 June 2010, Roger Ebert posted a review of Come and See as part of his "Great Movies" series, describing it as "one of the most devastating films ever about anything, and in it, the survivors must envy the dead... The film depicts brutality and is occasionally very realistic, but there's an overlay of muted nightmarish exaggeration... I must not describe the famous sequence at the end. It must unfold as a surprise for you. It pretends to roll back history. You will see how. It is unutterably depressing, because history can never undo itself, and is with us forever. " [65] Come and See appears on many lists of films considered the best. In 2008, Come and See was placed at number 60 on Empire magazine's "The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time" in 2008. [66] It also made Channel 4's list of 50 Films to See Before You Die [67] and was ranked number 24 in Empire magazine's "The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema" in 2010. [68] Phil de Semlyen of Empire has described the work as "Elim Klimov’s seriously influential, deeply unsettling Belarusian opus. No film – not Apocalypse Now, not Full Metal Jacket – spells out the dehumanising impact of conflict more vividly, or ferociously... An impressionist masterpiece and possibly the worst date movie ever. " [69] It ranked 154 among critics, and 30 among directors, in the 2012 Sight & Sound polls of the greatest films ever made. [70] Rotten Tomatoes reported a 96% approval critic response based on 23 reviews. [6] Klimov did not make any more films after Come and See, [71] leading some critics to speculate as to why. In 2001, Klimov said "I lost interest in making films... Everything that was possible I felt I had already done. I think that about sums it up - What is this movie? What is it trying to be? And when, oh when, will it end?
It's a bit too violent and has too many pointless, non-story progressing scenes to be a kids' movie but it is definitely not for adults. All the good bits are in the 30-second advert that convinced us to go and see it.
We saw a morning session at the cinema. At 10.57am I checked my watch, at 11.01am I checked my watch and was stunned to find time had completely slowed.
Although Chloe Coleman is an excellent actress and very watchable, every other character was unbelievable, unappealing and terribly written. What a waste of clever people like Kristen Schaal (or as I call her, Mel from Flight of the Conchords.
My older son thought it was okay but when pressed, couldn't name a favourite scene. The younger one gave up and ended up playing a game on my phone about an hour in.

Betty Gilpin in 'The Hunt' Universal and Blumhouse Vin Diesel's new comic book movie faces off against Blumhouse's controversial thriller, but the faith-based I Still Believe could end up the weekend’s new release champion. In a kind of mid-tier “in between” weekend after Pixar’s Onward and before Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II, we’ve got a handle of comparatively old-school studio programmers all fighting for a piece of the pie on the weekend of March 13. And since that’s three weeks away, we now have some official tracking numbers to go with our educated guesses. Originally scheduled for September 27, 2019 and then hastily dropped from the calendar after a handful of high-profile mass shootings and its inclusion in an ongoing political tug-of-war over its “liberal elites hunt red state deplorables for sport” elevator pitch, Universal’s The Hunt has now scheduled the $14 million action thriller for Friday the 13th. They released a new trailer and poster on February 11, one that explicitly leaned into the pre-release controversy (“The most talked-about movie of the year is one no one has seen. ”), with the hope that the expected deluge of free press will increase curiosity beyond those merely wanting a Blumhouse exploitation flick. And at this point, it’s tracking for a $10 million opening weekend. That’s aggressively “fine, I guess, ” with the obvious caveat that they only rescheduled the damn thing ten days ago. Again, I have seen the film and while the review will arrive closer to the release date, I can say that it’s entirely harmless grindhouse entertainment from a time when movies were cheap enough to not have to appeal to every plausible demographic. The Betty Gilpin/Hilary Swank flick may be doomed to be more talked about than seen. It’s cheap enough to not need to be a blockbuster. It’s also the kind of movie that’ll play forever on USA, FX or TNT. I’d love to see it break out, but that may depend on the actual critical consensus. Bloodshot (Vin Diesel) in Columbia Pictures' BLOODSHOT. © 2019 CTMG, Inc. All Rights Reserved. **ALL IMAGES ARE PROPERTY OF SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT INC. FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY. Also aiming for a $10 million debut is Sony’s Bloodshot. The $42 million-budgeted Vin Diesel flick is an adaptation of a Valiant comic book; intended to be the first installment in a Valiant cinematic universe. Uh… good luck with that? Vin Diesel has rarely been much of a draw, especially in North America, outside of the Fast & Furious movies, although the first xXx earned $142 million domestic way back in 2002. Nonetheless, he’s a big deal overseas for sure. xXx: Return of Xander Cage earned $385 million worldwide, including $164 million in China. Even The Last Witch Hunter earned $119 million overseas for a $126 million cume in late 2015, albeit on an alleged $90 million budget. So, yeah, give or take China potentially being off the table, if Bloodshot comes anywhere near the $126 million global cume of The Last Witch Hunter on half the budget, then it’s a franchise-starting hit. The film, about a KIA soldier who is apparently resurrected and implanted with nanotechnology which gives him superpowers, is from the same sandbox as The Wraith, Robocop, The Crow and Upgrade. So, there’s certainly potential if the movie is any good. The main theatrical trailer is both excellent and has been in theatrical rotation so long that I look forward to never having to watch it again. Cue “Memories Are Made Of This” getting stuck in your head all day. Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman in 'My Spy' STX Ironically, one of Vin Diesel’s biggest “not a Fast and Furious movie” hits was The Pacifier, which was straight from the Kindergarten Cop playbook of having a macho action star hanging out with children while trying to save the day. That 2005 comedy (which my wife inexplicably loves) earned $199 million on a $55 million budget. I bring that up because STX’s My Spy puts Dave Bautista in the same scenario (alongside Chloe Coleman). The delayed-from-2019 release, which looks genuinely entertaining (Kristen Schaal is always a treat), opens concurrently with Bloodshot. The buzz is pretty low on this one, so I would argue anything over $10 million would be a win. I hope it’s good, and I hope it breaks out. I Still Believe IMAX and Lionsgate The biggest newbie of the weekend may be Lionsgate’s I Still Believe. Directed by the Erwin Brothers, penned by Jon Erwin, Jon Gunn and Madeline Carrol, the Kingdom Story Company film is a Christian biopic about musician Jeremy Camp (played by  Riverdale ’s KJ Apa) and his relationship with his first wife (Brit Robertson) who fell ill shortly before their wedding. While titled after Camp’s song, the film is hoping to remind interested viewers of  I Can Only Imagine. It, along with  Peter Rabbit  and  Game Night, was among the few wide releases to thrive alongside  Black Panther. That early 2018 release concerned the true-life story which led to MercyMe’s “I Can Only Imagine, ” the best-selling Christian single of all time. I Still Believe is aiming to be this year’s big mainstream faith-based breakout along the lines of Heaven is For Real, War Room, Miracles From Heaven, The Shack, I Can Only Imagine and Breakthrough. At the moment, we’re probably looking at an over/under $15 million opening weekend. Of note, the film will be getting an early IMAX debut on March 11, and it will play in at least some IMAX theaters alongside Bloodshot when it opens two days later. This one could be the season’s least surprising “surprise hit, ” but in this VOD/streaming environment, I presume nothing even if the precedent is there.

Kaguya hime no monogatari full english sub. なんだろう ただ泣ける. I love Masakatsu Takagi's music but god damn the music from this and Wolf Children just ripped into my heart. Thanks for a wonderful film. Based on real Japanese folklore, the animation takes its tone from those original artworks I've seen on Japanese scrolls, and mixes it with contemporary anime.
I love the way animation can take such simple things as eating a melon or watching birds fly into a tree so much more exciting. By using traditional animation (although I need notice some computerize layouts) The Japanese have done it again with their personal approach to the detail of animation you can only get from 2D.
Adding to my enjoyment, this English adaption of the film includes the voice talent of Chloë Grace Moretz as the princess, who I've become a fan of.
It was very beautiful artwork moving across the big screen.

Kaguya-hime no monogatari eng sub. Description Deep in the countryside, a man named Okina works as a bamboo cutter in a forest, chopping away at the hollow plants day after day. One day, he discovers a small baby inside a glowing shoot. He immediately takes her home, convinced that she is a princess sent to Earth as a divine blessing from heaven. Okina and his wife Ouna take it upon themselves to raise the infant as their own, watching over her as she quickly grows into an energetic young girl. Given the name Kaguya, she fits right in with the village she has come to call home, going on adventures with the other children and enjoying what youth has to offer. But when Okina finds a large fortune of gold and treasure in the forest, Kaguya's life is completely changed. Believing this to be yet another gift from heaven, he takes it upon himself to turn his daughter into a real princess using the wealth he has just obtained, relocating the family to a mansion in the capital. As she leaves her friends behind to enter into an unwanted life of royalty, Kaguya's origins and purpose slowly come to light.

Boasting narrative depth, unbridled candor, and exquisite visual beauty, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" is a modern animated treasure with timeless appeal. Legendary Studio Ghibli cofounder Isao Takahata ( Grave of the Fireflies. Pom Poko" revisits Japan's most famous folktale in this gorgeous, hand-drawn masterwork, decades in the making. One day, an old bamboo cutter finds a princess side a shining stalk of bamboo. Along with his wife, he decides to raise the princess, who's only the size of a finger, but soon grows into an exquisite young lady. When Kaguya grows up, 5 men from prestigious families propose to her. Kaguya asks the men to find memorable marriage gifts for her, but they are unable to do so. Then, the Emperor of Japan himself proposes to her. The mysterious young princess enthralls all who encounter her, but ultimately she must confront her fate.
From the studio that brought you "Spirited Away" 2001. Princess Mononoke" 1997. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" 1984) and numerous other animated classics comes a powerful and sweeping epic that redefines the limits of animated storytelling while marking a triumphant highpoint within an extraordinary career in filmmaking for director Isao Takahata. The Japanese have long been revered as masters of animation, and "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" is a fitting farewell for one of the genre's greats.
With its sumptuous images and impressionistic storytelling, the film is nothing short of a delicate, stirring fable - both joyous and melancholic. The animation notwithstanding, what makes "Princess Kaguya" stick in emotional terms is its depiction of an extraordinary girl, learning for herself that a life without real joy and spontaneity is only a shadow of a life. A charmingly sad story is sweetly told through breathtaking, hand-drawn sketches to give us a sweeping epic that's lyrical and heartbreaking in ways which most live-action movies can only aspire to. If there's a message here about the foolhardiness of parental expectations and societal conformations, it fades away in the face of the film's rapturous visuals.
The fact that this film is animated using nothing more than a pen, pencil, brush, and watercolors shows that even today 2D done right brings more depth and visual appeal to a story than all the advanced CGI, 3D, razmattaz effects thrown together. Takahata and his team of animators meticulously craft each scene with hand-drawn sketches and mesmerizing textures that perfectly complements the themes of the whimsical story. "Princess Kaguya" boasts one hauntingly beautiful sight after another, seemingly built on nothing more than slight sketches and quick brushstrokes - something Hollywood movie moguls could learn from if they'd ever seek a way out of the exorbitant costs invested in their tech-savvy animated films.
Featuring a heart-tugging story with characters that stay with you, and showcasing some the most gorgeous artwork in Japan's rich anime history, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" is a spellbinding spectacle that easily takes its position as one of Ghilbi's best works.
